I started teaching English in Moscow in 2018 — children, students, and corporate groups at Gazfond, Joom and Apex — while taking a pharmacy degree at Sechenov University. Then I went into research: psychopharmacology in Moscow, then protein engineering at KAUST in Saudi Arabia, a master's in bioengineering, and a paper in Advanced Materials.
Those labs were completely international — Saudi, Russian, Chinese, Italian and Kazakh colleagues in one corridor. Brilliant people misunderstood each other every single day, and almost never over vocabulary. It was over what counts as polite, what counts as a decision, and what counts as honest.
That gap is what I teach now — and I teach it from inside it. I also learned Mandarin to HSK 5, so I know exactly what it's like to be the person in the room who's one step behind.
